Having a hearing disability makes us struggle in our daily lives, and very often, we are misunderstood in our inner circle.
We often hear the complaint: «How come you can’t hear (understand) if you are wearing hearing aids.»
This senseless and outrageous complaint comes from a widespread misunderstanding of the issues involved in a hearing disability.
It is taken for granted that all of us should hear well and understand clearly, but it is not always the case, as many of us know.
We sometimes feel isolated and depressed, and most of our relations are disrupted at some times in our lives, and it is a burden hard to carry every day.
For some, this load lightens when it is shared with someone who understands, and at OTOFON-HEARING-AIDS, we will devote the time needed to hear you every time you need to be heard.

In 1985 my son Gerardo was born with a severe hearing impairment, and since then, my life has revolved around hearing disabilities, hearing impairment, hearing aids, and fitting them correctly. At that time, I knew nothing about it, and painfully and due to many
disappointing and distressing experiences, we decided to take the problem into our hands.
Gerardo’s mother became an expert in aural hearing rehabilitation, and I became an expert in acoustics and hearing aid fitting.
The latter was relatively easy for me since my background was in mathematics and engineering, and I quickly understood the physics of sound. Hearing aids and concert halls are designed by engineers as well as headphones and sound systems.
Gerardo was my «first» client, and I am proud to have done a great job. Now, he is almost 40, and he hears, listens, talk, and live like an average hearing person. At times he struggles in noisy environments; he uses two hearing aids even though for several years he refused it.
Fitting hearing aids is like designing a tiny concert hall within your ear canal, and we do fit hearing aids following rational and objective procedures. We do extensive measuring to set everything correctly.
I was astonished that health professionals did not measure the gain at each frequency within the ear canal delivered by a hearing aid in the eighties. Therefore, I bought a piece of very specialized equipment (FONIX) to make such measurements and better fittings.
In the early nineties, we set up a hearing testing facility with state-of-the-art audiological equipment, perhaps the best in the country at that time, thanks to the funds provided by the Rotary Foundation, and I was the Rotarian in charge of obtaining those funds.
The hearing center was called «Oirá y Hablará»; «He will Hear and Talk,» and it helps many people and families, especially those in need.
We became very acquainted with the John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles, a prestigious worldwide center that helps parents of deaf and hard of hearing children. We organized a one-week Summer Course for families and their children in Mexico in conjunction with the John Tracy Clinic for five consecutive years. More than 300 families benefited from this effort.
In 2005 I founded OTOFON-HEARING-AIDS, a center to fit hearing aids to people of all ages and with exceptional care in small children since they cannot tell us how well they are hearing. It is a great responsibility that we take very seriously because we have a new life in our hands.

Many times, hearing aids with 8 channels are good enough for most listening situations; those are the ones that I personally use.

To ensure that the gain provided by the selected hearing aid meets each person’s audiometric thresholds and needs. Fitting is complemented by 2 or 3 additional sessions for fine-tuning the hearing aids during a 2- or 3-months span because hearing is a subjective matter. Fine-tunning sessions are provided at no cost.
Current research in the audiological field highlights the brain’s role in hearing and listening. Paradoxically the hearing organ is the brain; it is not the ear.
The ear is just a transducer (translator), an essential and sophisticated one that converts the sound waves into electric stimuli generated in the inner and outer cells of the cochlea in the inner ear via a neurological phenomenon known as synapsis.
Sound does not travel to your brain; the sound is constructed in your brain; this is very important to comprehend. Therefore, the importance of proper fitting is of the utmost relevance since we must provide our brains with the needed stimuli.
And it is crucial, when possible, to fit two hearing aids rather than one. It takes time for the brain to «understand» these new stimuli, but the brain is such a marvelous organ that does its job beyond our comprehension, very often disdained, disregarded, and taken for granted.
In some cases, and despite our best efforts and all the benefits that modern hearing aids offer, listening with hearing aids is not good enough, especially in noisy situations and hard-of-hearing environments.
Therefore, we have to use state-of-the-art resources that «bring» the sound to our ears across the noise contamination we face in our daily lives.
With deep concern, there are situations in which we cannot offer a reasonable restoration of our hearing capacities, not even with a cochlear implant.
Because of our intelligent transducer, our inner ear, most of the time, is severely damaged by noise, some medicines, genetic malformations, age, among other pathologies.

But the worst scenario is to fall in denial and do nothing. Remember, you can give your brain the opportunity to be stimulated again, trust what God has given us in our body, and be thankful for whatever outcome you may get.

I am a qualified engineer, not a physician; therefore, if I sense or think there is the slightest sign that you need professional medical help, even for wax removal, I will ask you to visit an MD of your choice.
As we said before, we charge no fee for each session or consultation—Nothing at all, no strings attached.
However, if you ask me to visit you at your home, we ask $400.00 Mexican pesos for gas and transportation expenses in the Chapala´s Ribera. I currently live in San Juan Cosalá.
Beyond my expertise in fitting hearing aids in the last 35 years and the courses and seminars in hearing aid fitting attended in those years, this is a brief account of my academic credentials.
In 1976 I graduated Magna Cum Laude at the U. Iberoamericana and the UNAM as an engineer. In 1978 graduated from The University of Pennsylvania and, in 2002, achieved a Ph.D. in Cultural Biology and Philosophy.
For ten years, I was a professor of Philosophy at the Graduate School of Medicine in the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, one of the most prestigious graduates and undergraduates’ schools of medicine in México.
I grasped a deep understanding of molecular biology and the integration of higher physiological functions such as the immune, vision, and hearing systems in our bodies.
I was raised to study, so my fields of interest are pretty broad. My library holds 3,000 titles. I play accordion, piano and I love music, reading, and photography. I used to assemble puzzles (24,000 pieces, the biggest) and big Lego Technics sets in my spare time. I like to ask the «ultimate questions.»
